What is Hypnotherapy? BACK TO TOP

Hypnosis is a state of consciousness you enter and leave naturally throughout the day. It feels very much like day dreaming - the state between sleeping and waking. During these periods you are in a relaxed state and more open to suggestion. Your relaxation gives you access to your subconscious mind. Hypnotherapy makes use of this natural ability by inducing this "hypnotic" state to enable healing and/or changes to be made on a subconscious level.

• Have you ever been so focused on a movie that you haven't heard someone call your name?
• Have you ever driven somewhere and not remembered the journey on arrival?
• Have you ever watched tv and stared at the screen not really paying attention?

These are all examples of being in a hypnotic state.

How does it work? BACK TO TOP

The fact is 90% of what your brain takes in is rooted within your subconscious. The subconscious mind runs our bodies. It is in charge of everything automatically. It looks after memories so we don't have to keep relearning, it holds onto habits (good and bad) and controls our emotions, fears and phobias.

Writing: we learn how to write and it becomes automatic
Walking/driving/jobs: we learn them and they become automatic.
Habits/Fears/Phobias: we learn them and they also become automatic

Because our habits, fears and phobias are in our subconscious this is where we need to deal with whatever is causing us problems or difficulties.Hypnosis can access your subconscious mind and help change - bad habits to good, identify and remove fears and phobias and reduce stress. By communicating directly with the subconscious mind Hypnosis can create rapid and permanent change.

What happens when I have hypnosis? BACK TO TOP

Before hypnosis takes place our hynotherapist will discuss with you exactly what it is you wish to change. After this, she will then run through the type of positive suggestions she will be making to you during hypnosis aimed at dealing with your particular problem. She will then ask you to get comfortable and begin hypnosis. All that is required to be hypnotised is a motivation to be hypnotised, concentration, imagination, relaxation and the willingness to respond to suggestion.

During hypnosis your conscious mind is aware of what is happening the whole time, but in this relaxed state it is bypassed in order to make suggestions directly to your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind accepts these suggestions and creates the behaviour changes or body changes in order to achieve the given suggestions. When in hypnotic trance, the subconscious mind is 88% more alert than in a conscious state.

Throughout this time, not only do you hear the suggestions being given to you by the hypnotherapist you can also hear everything going on around you. Because of this, quite often, people are not convinced they even have been hypnotised and when asked why, reply "Because I heard everything you said"

How does it feel? BACK TO TOP

Because everyone has experienced some level of hypnosis naturally don't be surprised if you don't feel hypnotised. During hypnosis you remain conscious of your surroundings. Some of the sensations you may experience during hypnosis are:

Tingling in your fingertips
• A sense of being light and floating from your body
• A heavy feeling like you are sinking
• A sense of energy moving throughout your body
• Feeling of emotions
• Fluttering eyelids

These sensations are not unpleasant and are just your body's way of relaxing. When you notice these sensations, go with the flow and do not become alarmed or you may shock yourself out of the trance. Just expect the trance to occur gradually and it will.
