You are what you eat and absorb BACK TO TOP

Your health and Physical well-being are directly influenced by the food you eat. Good nutrition can contribute towards a healthy heart, improved circulation, lower cholesterol, improved immune system, and gives you the ability to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

By identifying problems areas in your diet and correcting any imbalances, nutritional therapy can improve not only how you feel today, but how you will feel for the rest of your life.

What is nutritional therapy? BACK TO TOP

Clinical nutrition is not just about healthy eating, it is about matching your diet and lifestyle in order to give your body the nutrients it needs in order to achieve high levels of physical, mental and emotional well being.

Our nutritional therapists treat each patient as an individual, taking into account every aspect of their lives and background. They then prescribe a diet and supplements carefully matched to the individuals' needs. People from every walk of life and of every age can benefit from a consultation.

What Happens When You Visit Our Nutritionist? BACK TO TOP

The process starts with a one-to-one, fully confidential, consultation. During this consultation you will be required to fill in a detailed questionnaire which will cover all aspects of your Diet, Medical/Family History and Lifestyle.

The aim of this consultation is to assess your current intake of fats, carbohydrates and proteins and identify any biochemical imbalances including vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Dietary and nutrient imbalances that may be contributing to your current health problems such as hormonal dysfunction, food sensitivities, reduced tolerance to stress, low energy, poor immunity, behavioural problems, insomnia and infections from potential disease-causing organisms, are also addressed.

At the end of this initial consultation our nutritionist will provide you with a personalised dietary, lifestyle and nutritional supplement programme aimed at overcoming your current condition. If necessary, you may also be advised to undergo laboratory tests or seek medical advice to investigate the possibility of any underlying disease.

How Many consultations are needed? BACK TO TOP

A follow-up consultation is arranged for 3 weeks after the initial meeting and from then on every 4-6 weeks (2 or 3 are recommended) to monitor your progress and to make any necessary adjustments to your programme.

During follow-up consultations we discuss how things are going, assess test results (if applicable), deal with any new symptoms that may have arisen, introduce further dietary changes and if necessary add supplements to correct any biochemical imbalances.

FOOD INTOLERANCE

Food is very closely linked to the body's immune system which guards the body against poisons and harmful bacteria. If you are sensitive to a particular food your body doesn't completely digest it. This allows incompletely digested food to enter the bloodstream where it is treated as an enemy, putting your immune system under stress.

If you are regularly eating foods that does not agree with you, this stress will eventually weaken your immune system making you more prone to illness. However, identifying the foods you are intolerant to and eliminating them from your diet will enable your immune system to work more effectively at protecting you from illness.

Recognising a Food Intolerance BACK TO TOP

Food intolerance's usually manifest themselves within 1-72 hours of eating. There is not a proven immune response to food intolerance and it can be very difficult to pinpoint exactly when an intolerance to a certain food has begun. For many people the problems start with a headache or poor digestion, bloating, gas and wind. Slowly over the months or years, health problems become worse and a whole host of new symptoms can be experienced. These symptoms can fluctuate from day to day but generally sufferers are run down and more prone to infections and lethargy.

Symptoms Of Food Intolerance BACK TO TOP

Symptoms of food intolerance are many and varied and include the following:

Anxiety (acute or chronic)Arthritis, Asthma, Attention Deficit Disorder, Bed wetting, Bloating Bronchitis, Coeliac Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Constipation, Cystic fibrosis, Depression, Diarrhoea, Fibromyalgia, Gastritis, Headaches, Hyperactivity Disorder Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Insomnia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Itchy skin problems Malabsorption, Migraine, Sleep disturbances, Water retention, Weight control problems

Do many people suffer from food intolerance? BACK TO TOP

Millions of people suffer from food intolerance of some type, leading to years of ill health. Many go from doctor to doctor in an effort to solve the problem without any success. Most of this suffering could be reduced by a simple food intolerance test.

What is the difference between food intolerance and a food allergy? BACK TO TOP

Unlike food intolerance, a food allergy causes a hypersensitive reaction of the immune system and usually shows itself within a few minutes of eating or being exposed to the offending substance. Reactions can be severe and even cause death from anaphylactic shock. Nuts are one of the most commonly known triggers which cause this reaction.

Testing For Food Intolerance

We offer two Types of tests to identify food Intolerance's.

The "Vega" Food intolerance Test BACK TO TOP

The Vega test is one of the latest developments in food sensitivity testing. It was developed in Germany and is used to measure changes in body resistance. It is completely non-invasive and painless.

Our nutritionist gets you to hold onto a silver baton whilst a probe is placed on an acupuncture point on your finger. Both the baton and the probe are connected to a machine, making a complete circuit. Potential allergens are then inserted into the honeycomb matrix and a measurement is taken, using the frontal dials on the machine. Intolerance's and food sensitivities can be detected.

The test is an alternative, non-invasive procedure. It is NOT a medical diagnosis, nor does it pretend to be. Before the test begins you will need to complete a short questionnaire i.e. health problems, medications you are taking etc. When coming for a test it is also advisable to bring along any substance or material you feel you may be intolerant to.

ELISA Blood Test BACK TO TOP

The Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) provides a rapid and precise test for food intolerance. It works by measuring the amount of food specific IgG antibodies created within your blood against a number of different foods.

Our nutritionist takes a pinprick sample of your blood. This is sent to a laboratory where it is tested (results take 7-10 days). If there is an increase in IgG against a certain food, it means that your body is reacting to that food by making antibodies against it. The technique of ELISA is considered the best method for detecting antibody reactions to foods. Over the years the IgG food test has helped many thousands of people improve their health and their quality of life.

Other Conditions We Can Test You For BACK TO TOP

We also offer tests for a wide variety of other conditions including: Anaemia, Candida, Cholesterol, Osteoporosis, Thyroid Test Coeliac Disease Parasite Screen, Transglutaminase Gastric Ulcers Urinalysis

Conditions We Specialise In.

Candida BACK TO TOP

Candida Albicans is a parasitic yeast like fungus that inhabits everybody's gut. Normally this bacterium settles in the gut where it does not cause a problem as we have billions of 'good' bacteria, which keeps all the 'bad' bacteria under control. The problem starts when the 'good' bacteria are knocked out and depleted allowing the 'bad' bacteria to grow and spread.

If it spreads out of control it can cause a variety of symptoms including bowel problems, oral or vaginal thrush, cystitis and a number of generalised symptoms such as headache, low blood sugar and general malaise.

A poor diet, excessive use of antibiotics and exposure to a polluted environment intake of chlorinated tap water, can all destroy the body's healthy beneficial flora allowing candida to flourish. If left unchecked it can turn into Candidaisis which in turn can lead to many more serious disorders such as:Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Arthritis, High Blood Pressure, Thrush and Depression.

How We Can Help: Candida can often be identified by our nutritionist without the use of tests. However, because there are such wide range of symptoms associated with Candida overgrowth it is not always obvious that Candida is causing the problem. Sometimes, the only way to know for sure is to take a Candida test in order to ensure that the symptoms are correctly treated.

Once diagnosed, Candida is easily treated through dietary change and the use of high strength probiotic supplements. Probiotics can greatly increase the "good bacteria" in the gut.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome BACK TO TOP

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells. Although it is normal to have cholesterol, when the level in the blood gets too high there is a major risk of coronary heart disease. This can lead to heart attacks and also an increase the risk of suffering a stroke.

When trying to reduce cholesterol levels it is important not to cut out all fats because some fats are essential for good health. Knowing which fats raise cholesterol and which ones don't is the first step in lowering your risk of heart disease.

Fats that are bad for you are - Saturated fat and trans-fatty acids raise blood cholesterol. These are found in beef fat, veal, lamb, pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, milk, cheeses and other dairy products made from whole milk, coconut oil, palm oil and palm kernel oil (often called tropical oils), and cocoa butter

Fats that are good for you are - Monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. These come from safflower, sesame and sunflower seeds, corn and soybeans, many nuts and seeds, and their oils.

How We Can Help: If you are worried about cholesterol our nutritionists can give you a cholesterol test. This can be supported by a personalised diet plan to correct the balance of cholesterol in your body.

Childhood Behavioural Problems (Hyperactivity and ADHD) BACK TO TOP

Hyperactivity and ADHD in children has increased greatly in the last few decades. Many children are prescribed drugs to improve their behaviour. However, we believe that many of these conditions can be due to nutritional deficiencies and imbalances caused by faulty eating and just a simple change of diet may be all that is needed.

When you eat processed foods containing additives and artificial colours, you are introducing chemicals into your bloodstream. These chemicals find their way into the brain and alter brain function, and in the case of children who have been diagnosed with ADHD, it alters their behaviour to make them restless or to have a shortened attention span.

The Hyperactive Children's Support Group, with the support of Dr.Neil Ward, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Surrey, found that, out of a total of 357 children who had been diagnosed as hyperactive, 87% had adverse reactions to artificial colourings and 72% to artificial preservatives in food. Similar results were discovered in 1993 at the Institute of Child Health, and as long ago as 1987 a Scottish psychiatrist, Dr. Ian Menzies, obtained consistently positive results in treating hyperactive children by removing artificial additives from their diet. Similarly, a recent report published by the Food Commission confirms that studies involving 277 children on the Isle of Wight have shown food additives to be a major cause of misconduct in children

How We Can Help: Our Nutritionist can advise you on every aspect of your child's diet. Allowing you to make informed choices that will quickly improve your child's condition without having to resort to medication.

Constipation BACK TO TOP

A person is constipated when fewer than 3 bowel actions happen in a week, or if there is often a need to strain to pass a stool.

A common cause of constipation is poor diet. However, it is also common to become constipated through taking medicines such as: antacids which contain aluminium or calcium, some painkillers such as codeine and some anti-depressants and tranquillisers.

Increasing fibre (roughage) into the diet can greatly improve the condition. Much of the food we eat is digested in the stomach and small intestine, but fibre is not digested and passes to the large intestine (colon). Here it acts like blotting paper, drawing water into the stool, increasing the number of bacteria in the colon. Both of these effects make the stool larger, softer and easier to pass.

The easiest way to improve your diet is to eat brown, wholemeal bread and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. If this is insufficient, a good way to further increase fibre is to sprinkle one or two tablespoons of bran on breakfast cereal.

How We Can Help: If your constipation is persistent, our nutritionists can create a personalised diet plan and advise you on the best way to increase fibre into your diet. They can also look into the underlying causes of your condition and advise you accordingly in order that you can avoid the symptoms in the future. You should also consider Colonic Irrigation.

High blood pressure BACK TO TOP

It is very important to control high blood pressure because of the increased risks of heart attack and stroke that it risks, as well as potential damage to other organs such as the kidneys

Diet can play a large part in lowering high blood pressure. By eating the right amounts and balance of food you greatly reduce your risk of disease. Artery walls can become healthier, and improvements in blood chemistry can result including cholesterol levels..

Controlling your weight is also a very important step that you can take to reduce your high blood pressure Losing just a few extra pounds can help lower your blood pressure considerably. Keeping your weight under control will also make it easier for you to exercise, helping you feel better, and reducing your chance of having a heart attack.

How We Can Help: Our nutritionists can look into the underlying causes of your high blood pressure and advise you on all aspects of diet and exercise.

Low Energy BACK TO TOP

Stress has a very real impact on your body and creates an increased need for nutrients, which if not met can cause a downward spiral away from good health.

Anxiety, headaches, frequent infections, and sinus congestion are often the first signs of stress taking a toll on our bodies.

If you are feeling ‘tired all the time’, run-down or generally stressed, we can show you how to pack stress-busting nutrients into your busy lifestyle.

Low energy can be caused by a number of factors. It may result from extra demands on the body such as childbirth, periods of stress, or during the menopause. It can also very often be found to be due to digestive problems or to improper eating habits. However, low energy mostly results from a combination of reasons.

How We Can Help: Our nutritionists can help identify the reasons for your low energy and put them right allowing you to regain much higher levels of energy

Asthma BACK TO TOP

Food allergy can cause both immediate and delayed patterns of asthma. Immediate food reactions can cause sudden, dramatic and life-threatening asthma. Delayed patterns of food allergy can cause chronic asthma and/or bronchitis. Diet revision can sometimes resolve chronic and severe asthma.

Food allergens travel from the digestive tract to the lungs. They may also be found in the blood stream. These allergens can cause a variety of symptoms, including constriction of the bronchial smooth muscle in the lungs; this is the first event of an asthmatic attack.

How We Can Help: Our nutritionists can help identify any foods that may be causing symptoms of Asthma. They can then formulate a comprehensive diet management plan to help solve the food allergy problem and so help ease the condition..
